Arrival By Design

This project began with a simple question: how could an underused bedroom better serve the needs of an active family? In this 1969 home, storage near the main living areas was limited, and the garage opened directly into the family room without a dedicated landing space for shoes, backpacks, sports equipment, or everyday essentials. By reimagining a little-used front bedroom, the design transformed a missing function within the home into one of its most valuable spaces.

The solution centered on redefining the home's circulation. By closing the existing garage entry into the family room and creating a new connection through the mudroom, the entire arrival experience was reshaped. What was once an abrupt transition into a living space became a purposeful sequence that supports daily routines and helps contain the clutter of an active household. This single architectural move fundamentally changed how the family enters, moves through, and experiences the home.

The former bedroom was reconfigured into a combined mudroom and laundry room, balancing storage, organization, and functionality. The laundry was relocated from a small kitchen closet and redesigned to include a stacked washer and dryer to maximize storage. Custom benches, cubbies, shoe storage, a folding surface, and hanging space provide dedicated areas for every family member, while integrated pet food storage ensures that even the needs of the family's dogs and cats were thoughtfully considered. A patterned tile floor paired with custom colored cabinetry adds warmth, durability, and character to this hardworking space.

The result is a highly functional hub that brings order and ease to everyday life. More than simply adding storage, the renovation creates a deliberate transition between the garage and the home, improving flow while supporting the rhythms of a busy family. What was once an overlooked bedroom now serves as an essential organizational center, demonstrating how a strategic design intervention can transform how a home functions.
